Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum

Amsterdam is a truly stunning city. Tulips upon tulips, traditional canals, bicycles and lots of good vibes. It is above all the lightness of this city that fascinates. But its most beautiful treasure lies in one of the museums: the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam. It is the largest of its kind in the world and houses a huge treasure of Vincent Van Gogh’s works. In this article you will find all the important information about the museum, the exhibitions and special exhibitions that take place throughout the year.

A must-see of painting: The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam

Among the Van Gogh museums worldwide, the one in Amsterdam stands out. It is the largest and certainly the most impressive of its kind. Even without any knowledge of art, you are caught by a kind of magic that surrounds his paintings. In a gallery in Milan, I suddenly had tears in my eyes when I stood in front of one of his self-portraits. Van Gogh’s handwriting is touching and unique. This fine, characteristic brushstroke, the structure it creates, provoke the desire to step directly into the paintings.

His famous sunflowers reveal how many people are proverbially touched. In recent years, many of Van Gogh’s works have been restored and are now available for public viewing again. In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions by other artists are held from time to time, but they always relate to Van Gogh’s painting. You need to see Van Gogh’s works up close to experience their fascination.

Special exhibitions at the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam

from 20 May to 4 September 2022 Colour as a Language

From 20 May, the Van Gogh Museum presents Colour as Language, a retrospective of the artist Etel Adnan (1925-2021). The exhibition focuses on Adnan’s colourful paintings, which are presented alongside ten works by Vincent van Gogh, who was a source of inspiration for Adnan.

First retrospective exhibition by Etel Adnan with works by Vincent van Gogh

Colour as Language was developed in close collaboration with the artist herself: Before Adnan’s death in November 2021, the museum spoke with her on numerous occasions about her life, her work and Van Gogh. Her own words run like a thread through the exhibition. Colour as Language explores the two artists‘ connection with nature, their intense use of colour as a form of expression and the role of language in their lives and work. The exhibition opens this Friday and will be on display until 4 September 2022.

My tip at this point: take the train to the almost car-free city of Amsterdam! You can get to Amsterdam comfortably by train from Berlin, Rostock, Dresden, Hanover. Whatever region you come from, Trainline helps you find the right train and book it directly. From Vienna you can even take the night train directly to Amsterdam. This saves you valuable time and allows you to fully enjoy the day of arrival and departure. With this European booking system for train journeys, you also buy your tickets for different trains. After arriving in Amsterdam Centraal, you are already in the centre and probably not far from your accommodation. Trams run directly in front of the station in all directions of the city.

The transport structure in Amsterdam is very good, with public transport taking you comfortably all over the city. If you have already bought the Amsterdam Pass, you can transfer without having to worry about tickets.
