A place where there is even a Minister for Tolerance

Tolerance conference in Abu Dhabi in memory of historic papal visit

It was a great and historic moment when Pope Francis and the Cairo Grand Imam Ahmad Mohammad Al-Tayyeb signed the „Document on the Fraternity of All People for Peaceful Coexistence in the World“ in a joint declaration. That was in Abu Dhabi in February 2019, then the first visit of a Pope to the Arabian Gulf.

The spirit of this historic encounter has remained present in the Emirates. As part of the current Expo 2020 in Dubai (date changed to 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022 due to pandemic, editor’s note), tolerance and coexistence, cooperation and reconciliation were the focus of a major international conference for three days. With high aspirations and regional and global efforts to eliminate extremism and terrorism, the conference promoted the strengthening of the values of tolerance and cooperation, brotherhood and peace around the world.

The 2019 Abu Dhabi Declaration expressed the aspiration of both religions to work together to promote global peace, respect freedom of belief and expression, and uphold civil rights in the spirit of equality for all people. The document explicitly condemns violence and terror in the name of religion. The recent conference highlighted the positive role of religion in addressing current challenges.

More serenity between people, dialogue and positive communication is a secure way to achieve prosperity in society and the world, it was said. The aim is to familiarise people everywhere – young people, families, schools, universities, state institutions and civil society – with what Islam represents as a model for a happy life.

Several hundred high-ranking participants from all over the world, including numerous ministers and other representatives of governments, religious leaders of different faiths, furthermore scientists and researchers as well as young people from all continents dealt with the topic „Inclusive Citizenship: From Mutual Coexistence to Shared Conscience“ for three days in Abu Dhabi. The patron was the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan; it was opened by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, a minister other states do not have, namely the Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.
